It’s amazing that just last century, our communication via telephone hinged on switchboard operators tirelessly connecting people by hand! It’s incredible and something that most of us probably take for granted. With that, I present the newest (and first female) Job of Yesteryear, The Switchboard Operator! She will be on display at the Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery through June. Stay tuned…

The Switchboard Operator (unfinished)

With a whole week off of school, I’ve actually found some time to put the brush to canvas and make some headway on The Switchboard Operator. Here’s the progress thus far, hoping to finish it this weekend.

Doc’s (my wife and I) will be at the Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery for first Friday on April 6th, 6-8pm debuting The Switchboard Operator. Matted prints of the Jobs of Yesteryear series will also be available for $40. Hoping to get an online store up and running shortly.

Doc’s Goes to Denver

I applied to a call for entries and got two pieces accepted for this year’s IceBreaker Show at the Ice Cube Gallery in Denver. It showcases up and coming artists living and working in Colorado. I will be at the opening on Friday, February 3rd and hope to see you there!

My First Booth!

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve done this blogging thing. My apologies, if an apology is needed.

I recently won an Inventor Art Competition put on by the DaVinci Institute. It was a joyous occasion and I won over $1500 in cash and prizes. The prize that I’m most excited about is that my wife Ashley and I get to peddle our wares out of a booth at the Inventor Showcase! It will be the first official Doc’s Lollipops Peddling Wares Booth and I’m sure it will be great fun. We’re going to give out magnets along with a drawing for a mini-print (7″x14″) of ‘The Lamplighter’! I love contests and now we get to run one!

I also gave a short interview to impactlab.com as a result of winning the contest. My first booth and my first press release! What a week!

I also realized that I hadn’t posted a picture of ‘The Pinsetter’ yet. So, here it is:

Now Presenting: The Ice Cutter

Back before the days of refrigeration, blocks of ice were cut out of frozen lakes and stored in ice houses to keep food cool over the hot summer months. They used long band saws to cut out the blocks and then grabbed them using large calipers.

I was drawn to this Job not only by the aesthetic of the mountains but also the tools they used. All four Job paintings will make their public debut tonight and tomorrow at the “Pancakes and Booze” show at the Lucid Gallery in Denver.

The River Driver

Back before logs were hauled by truck to the sawmill, they were floated down rivers in massive heaps of chaos. Seeking to control this calamity was the River Driver. This was a particularly dangerous job that necessitated courage and strength, as well as intelligence and knowledge of the physics of the river. The good ones were also quite graceful as you are basically spending your day on a moving island of logs. Many died and more were severely injured. This painting is my ode to the River Drivers.

The Lector

In cigar-rolling factories of the past, workers used to pool their money together to hire someone to read the days news aloud to them while they worked. This person was titled “the lector”.
